Bywell for AI assistants

Bywell's connector brings your portfolio, watchlists, alerts, notes, goals and investing course into AI assistants. It's an MCP server, live in ChatGPT and Claude.

Connect

  • Server URL: https://api.bywell.org/mcp (Streamable HTTP).
  • Sign-in: OAuth 2.1 with PKCE and dynamic client registration. You sign in with your Bywell account (or create one), pick Free or Pro, and allow the assistant. An assistant can ask for read-only access (the bywell:read scope); then every tool that changes something refuses.
  • Who can use it: anyone with a Bywell account, free at bywell.org, in the United States or Canada. Linked brokerage holdings need a brokerage linked to Bywell (read-only through SnapTrade, on Pro); Free includes 5 holdings added by hand, 1 watchlist and 1 goal. Over a limit, a tool says so and links to the upgrade.
  • Limits: 60 tool calls per minute per account.

What it can't do

Bywell can't place trades, move money or see your brokerage password, and it doesn't sell anything or take payments in the assistant. It gives general information and education, not investment advice, and never tells you to buy or sell.

Tools

Read tools only look. Write tools change something in your Bywell account. Sensitive writes can't be undone.

Account and portfolio

  • get_account · Read. Their plan and what it includes, this month's Bywell AI use, where they invest and what they want help with.
  • get_portfolio_summary · Read. A rundown in one call: total value, each account, the five largest positions and how concentrated they are.
  • get_holdings · Read. Positions across linked brokerages and holdings they added by hand, with value, cost and weight.
  • get_allocation · Read. Where the money sits: by account tax treatment, by currency and by market.

Watchlists

  • get_watchlists · Read. Their watchlists and the stocks in each.
  • add_to_watchlist · Write. Adds stocks to a watchlist, creating it if needed.
  • remove_from_watchlist · Write. Takes a stock off their watchlists.

Alerts and reminders

  • list_alerts · Read. Their notification settings and price alerts.
  • set_price_alert · Write. Alerts them when a stock crosses a price or moves a percentage.
  • delete_price_alert · Write. Removes one price alert.
  • mute_stock_alerts · Write. Mutes or unmutes alerts about one stock.
  • update_notification_settings · Write. Changes how much Bywell notifies them.
  • list_reminders · Read. Their earnings reminders.
  • create_earnings_reminder · Write. Reminds them around earnings for the stocks they hold and watch.
  • delete_reminder · Write. Removes an earnings reminder.

Investment journal

  • get_journal · Read. Their thesis and dated notes for a stock, or for every stock.
  • save_note · Write. Adds a dated note, such as the reasoning behind a trade or saved research.
  • update_note · Write. Replaces the text of one note.
  • delete_note · Sensitive write. Permanently deletes one note.
  • update_thesis · Write. Writes or updates their thesis for one stock.
  • get_conversations · Read. Their past Bywell AI research chats.
  • get_conversation · Read. One past Bywell AI chat in full, with its sources.

Goals and contribution room

  • get_goals · Read. Savings goals with progress measured against real holdings.
  • create_goal · Write. Adds a savings goal.
  • update_goal · Write. Changes a savings goal.
  • get_contribution_room · Read. Room left this year in TFSA, RRSP and FHSA (Canada) or IRA, 401(k) and HSA (US).
  • set_contribution_room · Write. Saves the room figure they read from CRA My Account or the IRS limit.

Investing course

  • get_learning_path · Read. Bywell's course, unit by unit, with progress and the next lesson.
  • get_lesson · Read. One lesson's text, check question and practice questions.
  • complete_lesson · Write. Marks a lesson done, shared with the Bywell app.

Errors

Errors come back as a tool result in plain English the assistant can relay: a plan limit (with the upgrade link), a read-only connection, the rate limit, or a stock Bywell can't price. Bywell's data comes from market data providers and SnapTrade; if one is unavailable, the tool says what's missing rather than guessing.
